Art and social justice in the works of Bob Birch, Christopher Crouch, Susan Norrie & David Mackenzie, and Jon Tarry

Jon Tarry’s video installation, sculptural works and works on paper explore a range of geopolitical relationships that exist between Australia and the rest of the world. His exploration of the Curtin Detention Centre in the North West Kimberly – which is a military air base, a processing point for refugees, and a domestic airport all in one – provides a particularly powerful exploration of this subject.

"For his first solo exhibition in Perth, George Egerton-Warburton will be presenting an installation that will form the framework for a narrative that he will deliver each day in the gallery.

The installation is based on a Piazza that Egerton-Warburton recalls visiting in Italy in 2008. Surrounding a faux-baroque fountain in the centre of the gallery will be a coffee table and benches, with paintings adorning the walls according to the exterior frescoes of the buildings in the piazza.

The scene evokes a sense of casually encouraged serendipity as the viewers enter the gallery which now resembles the decorated gizzards of an antique European romantic film, or an amateur theatre production. Patrons and flâneurs alike are invited to slump around and be served coffee by Egerton-Warburton at a specific time each day, before he joins them around the coffee table and delivers a narrative.

With the aid of the objects in the gallery, the spoken word delivered will reflect the format of the Piazza, as an intersection for conflicting ideas and styles. As with the beat poets, rappers, and bush ballads he has heard spun, the narrative will be softly abstracted, beginning with the everyday, and speckled with references to the phenomenon of “Ley lines”, illicit laboratory analogies, personal memories, fleeting blog posts, Priapus, movements and contrasting analytic evaluations of his generation, chicken mustering, the eternal rise of fall of lives and nations, and recent trips to different nations including, Italy, Principality of Hutt River, and Egerton-Warburton’s own Bongolia. The monologue will constitute both a new and revised investigation into the philosophical notion of “the good life” and “autonomy”.

George Egerton-Warburton is an emerging Artist based in Perth. His practice is process and narrative driven, and has been described as existing in the space between work ethic and the absurd. He has recently exhibited work in the 2010 Next Wave festival in Melbourne, Via Farini in Milan, PICA, Fremantle Art Centre, as well as art awards and artist run spaces in Sydney and Tasmania."
George has been supported by the Department of Culture and the Arts. The project has been supported by Little Creatures.

Glick has continually sought collaboration as a source of inspiration, developing an international art space, working with people across many disciplines and on occasion even going so far as to fabricate collaborations. Such fantasies are often more interesting.

Australian Book Wins Best Photography Prize at PhotoEspaña (PHE10)

Australian photographer Max Pam’s Atlas Monographs published by T&G Publishing Sydney has taken out the coveted “Best Photography Book Prize (International Category)” for the 2010 edition at PhotoEspaña in Madrid.

PHotoEspaña International Festival of Photography and Visual Arts is a major event in the annual calendar attracting an audience of more than 600,000 from around the world.

Atlas Monographs was named in the top 100 Best Photography Books of the Year for 2010, the only Australian book to make the list. Publisher Gianni Frinzi was advised of the win in the “Best Photography Book Prize (International Category)” this week. An Awards ceremony will be held in Madrid on 24th June.

“We are absolutely delighted with the win. Max (Pam) and I worked tirelessly to ensure the integrity and quality of the book. It is fantastic to be rewarded with this international prize,” said Gianni.

“T&G is focused on bringing the best of Australian photography to the world. This prize is not only recognition for Max Pam’s tremendous body of work, and for T&G. It is a real boost for Australian photography publishing. To my knowledge we are the first to win this prize in Australia.”
 The PhotoEspaña jury comprised Juan Manuel Bonet, critic and former director of Museum Reina Sofia; Pep Carrio, photographer; Wim van Sinderen, curator at The Hague Museum of Photography; Miguel Lopez, Director of Antonio Saura Foundation and Alberto Corazon, designer.

Atlas Monographs
In Atlas Monographs Max Pam shares his journeys through Zanzibar, China, South India, Yemen, Madagascar, Karakoram and the South China Sea. The book features photographs from his nascent years in the early 1970’s to images taken as recently as 2006. The vast majority of pictures in Atlas Monographs have not been published before. The book not only contains photographs spanning four decades, but also excerpts from the journals Max kept on his travels.

Double Take showcases five new commissions by six emerging artists. Designed with MetroTech Center's specific conditions in mind, the artists have taken an element of the existing architecture or environment and subjected it to a process of modification or metamorphosis. Each work plays with fantasy and illusion to force a shift in perception, in turn creating a mirage of sorts. Nothing is as it seems: a chain-link fence dissolves into pixels, a bonfire yearns for its flame, outdoors is indoors, a ghost lurks, and a lamppost bends.Double Take celebrates the curious over the comfortable, the strange over the simple, and the mysterious over the mundane.

MINUS SPACE is delighted to announce a new immersive installation by Basel, Switzerland-based artist Daniel Göttin entitled Network 45 with Signs. For the past 20 years, Göttin has focused on making temporary, site-specific interventions that examine the subjective nature of perception. His installations, always consisting of common industrial materials, such as tape, carpet, and paint, playfully respond to the specific characteristics of an architectural site and activate the viewer's relationship to it.For Network 45 with Signs, Göttin will create a black tape wall installation throughout the entire gallery. At select intervals throughout his installation, he will also install a series of abstract "signs" made of aluminum foil on laminated cardboard, which were informed and inspired by his recent residency in Manhattan's Chinatown has mounted nearly 60 solo exhibitions and projects since 1990 at museums, galleries, and non-profits worldwide, including throughout Europe, Japan, Australia, and the United States. His work has been presented, commissioned, collected, and written about widely over the past 20 years. In addition to his artistic work, Göttin, along with his partner, artist Gerda Maise, also directs Hebel_121, an experimental exhibition space in Basel, Switzerland.Daniel Göttin's installation Network 42 (2008) is also still on view in the café at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center / A Museum of Modern Art Affiliate in Long Island City, NY. It was originally created for the exhibition MINUS SPACE, curated by Phong Bui, which was on view at the museum from October 2008 - May 2009.SUPPORT

We just visited Pemberton where Sue and Mark Grey Smith presented an exhibition of selected work of their mother, Helen Grey Smith. Now 93, Helen has been working since she graduated from Hammersmith School of Art, London, in 1954. Included in the exhibition are some wonderful early works on paper and lengths of silk-screened material. The exhibition was hosted by the Pemberton Art Group.

Rodney has just completed new sculptures from the ongoing 'Everyone' series.
Working with local traditional craftspeople and students from the art school in Denpasar he has incorporated an ecletic mix of Hindu iconography, religion and pshychology. The work will be shown in Indonesia and later brought back to Australia.
